Frightened, frozen, frustrated, weary, and alone. There is anger over the lack of support that medical professionals have been lacking for years, culminating now in this war. And many are also feeling guilty or ashamed; ashamed for not wanting to go to work, or guilt for not being on the front lines.
-Try spending 3-5 minutes each morning before going to work, sit and take a few breaths and find your center.
-Then find your "why"; whether it's been 3 years or 30 years, what made you choose this career path? Try to connect with that decision again.
-Find your support. Share your feelings with your family, your colleagues. Do NOT try to go this alone.
-Get rest, stay hydrated, and eat healthy as much as possible.
-FORGIVE yourself for the people you lose. It's not your fault.
-CELEBRATE the people you save! There are so many.
-Congratulate yourself and each other for the innovations that are being made every day.
-Be gentle to yourself; we are all on this Earth together, each in our own way just trying to get by.
I practiced medicine in New York for 30 years before succumbing to "burnout". All the reasons I left are magnified with the COVID-19 crisis: the lack of staffing support, shifting availability of supplies, conditional and inconsistent compensation, unrealistic demands of administrators.
Now add the challenge of fearing for our lives and the lives of our families, and the heartache of losing patients.
I have returned part time to the practice of clinical medicine in the urgent care setting while continuing my coaching practice.
I want to offer you a free, safe space to share your feelings and challenges, and together develop short and long-term solutions to these challenges. Get in touch with your heart and your strength, and share small ways to rejuvenate. Find bits of joy and humor, forgiveness, and celebration.
Individual or Group
Free sessions will be adapted specifically for facing the demands of the War on COVID-19
As a "burnout survivor", I specialize in serving medical and other professionals who are wrestling with feeling disconnected, overtired, and under-appreciated in the impersonal, corporatized world. I also work with clients before they become so frustrated that they are tearing out their hair, and help them to re-engage and get excited again about their careers.
Coaching is a forward looking process. We start from where you are right now, independent of how you got here, and by helping you discover your own dreams, strengths, and resources, together we plan how you can achieve what you want to be. My goal is for you to feel impassioned about your life on a daily basis.
"Coaching is the process of partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."
-International Coach Federation
During our coaching sessions, you will identify which aspects of medicine (or your other professional work) used to excite you and make you look forward to showing up every day. Then we will evaluate how you can work those things back into your life. Together we will also identify how the other forces in your life contribute as sources of comfort and satisfaction or as frustration and stressors, and find ways to improve the support you receive from these other directions.
The corporate world is here to stay. Learning to juggle the satisfaction of your soul with the satisfaction of your contract is essential to keeping you energized and motivated, and increases not only your general happiness but your ability to succeed in that corporate world. The Fowler Coaching System is a method fine-tuned to discovering where your heart is, and what your ideal life would look like. Then we develop actionable steps for you to manifest that vision.

“I was honored to join Dr. Debra Blaine‘s group session for physicians who are choosing big changes in their life or career. Debra is an experienced and incredibly kind coach, and the whole group enjoyed and benefitted from our time together. She chose fun and thought-provoking exercises for us; and I know I will make good use of them. Thank you, Debra"

Fowler charges a fraction of what many other coach training programs cost, and you can set your own pace, and finish in less than a month if you choose. You do not need to spend 8 months and $8,000 to become certified. You will complete your training with a wealth of knowledge and all the tools you'll need to confidently launch your new coaching practice. And you will have lifelong support from the Fowler Academy.
Once you are certified, you can coach any niche you choose. And of course, you do not need to be a physician to become a coach! You only need to care about people and want to make a difference.
