As a "burnout survivor", I specialize in serving medical and other professionals who are wrestling with feeling disconnected, overtired, and under-appreciated in the impersonal, corporatized world. With the advent of the pandemic, I also work with clients who are struggling to find meaning in their chosen work amid the risks and difficulties of functioning in a society that no longer feels familiar.
The best case scenario is to start the coaching process before you become so frustrated that you are ready to quit, and help you to re-engage and get excited again about your career. But wherever you are, we will start form there, and get you moving in the right direction for you.
Coaching is a forward looking process. We start from where you are right now, independent of how you got here, and by helping you discover your own dreams, strengths, and resources, together we plan how you can achieve what you want to be. My goal is for you to feel impassioned about your life on a daily basis.
"Coaching is the process of partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."
-International Coach Federation
During our coaching sessions, you will identify which aspects of medicine (or your other professional work) used to excite you and make you look forward to showing up every day. Then we will evaluate how you can work those things back into your life. Together we will also identify how the other forces in your life contribute as sources of comfort and satisfaction or as frustration and stressors, and find ways to improve the support you receive from these other directions.
The corporate world is here to stay. Learning to juggle the satisfaction of your soul with the satisfaction of your contract is essential to keeping you energized and motivated, and increases not only your general happiness but your ability to succeed in that corporate world. The Fowler Coaching System is a method fine-tuned to discovering where your heart is, and what your ideal life would look like. Then we develop actionable steps for you to manifest that vision.

“I was honored to join Dr. Debra Blaine‘s group session for physicians who are choosing big changes in their life or career. Debra is an experienced and incredibly kind coach, and the whole group enjoyed and benefitted from our time together. She chose fun and thought-provoking exercises for us; and I know I will make good use of them. Thank you, Debra"

The pandemic in a country divided has become our current reality, and yet, that reality is still constantly changing. In a way, the current reality is still that there is no current reality. Will the vaccine make life "normal", and if so, when? Will we be able to unite as a country to address the rifts in our society and heal our wounds? What can we count on?
This is a marathon, not a sprint. We have to live our lives, we have to stay connected to our loved ones, we need to earn a living. We can't just hold our breath and wait for 2020 to end.
Some careers have taken a big hit and are not viable for us now, some careers were dissatisfying before the pandemic. Learning to adapt involves discovering and acknowledging our resources. We frequently dismiss skills that we already have which could be used to improve our quality of life and our income.
Coaching can help you identify your options for a better life. Before, during ,and after distribution of a vaccine or effective anti-viral medication, and as we move hopefully toward a more united America.
The saying is:
"Give a person a fish, and they won't be hungry.
Teach a person to fish, and they will never starve."
If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that life is unpredictable.
Those who succeed are the people who learn how to learn. They can change direction and live differently.
They know how to live with uncertainty.
Coaching can help you navigate the changing landscape of your life.
Security is an illusion. Tomorrow is never a promise. But human stamina, flexibility, and fortitude are iconic. And the human capacity to find joy and hope is boundless.
I practiced medicine in New York for 30 years before succumbing to "burnout". Then I took off for nearly a year and learned to identify and satisfy the needs of my soul. I published my first novel, certified as a coach, and healed my heart before I returned, part-time, to the practice of clinical medicine.
All the reasons I left became magnified with the COVID-19 crisis, but I have changed. I learned to reframe my life and learned how to tackle the challenges that used to stand in the way of getting what I want out of my time here on this planet.
Now my greatest satisfaction is in coaching others to fulfill their own deepest desires and potential, and I celebrate their accomplishments with them as if they were my own.
But we can learn how to prepare for the unpredictable.
